Forklift Safety: Rough Terrain

Description

Operating a powered industrial truck on a smooth warehouse floor is challenging enough. Operating one on a construction site—with uneven ground, loose soil, slopes, and changing conditions—raises the risk significantly. That’s where Class VII rough terrain forklifts come in. These machines, including vertical mast, variable reach, and truck- or trailer-mounted forklifts, are built specifically for unimproved terrain and active construction environments.

Because these forklifts operate with heavy loads on unstable surfaces, they come with higher risk. As a result, OSHA has specific requirements for their safe operation under 29 CFR 1910.178, along with additional guidance provided through OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck eTool.

This course provides the knowledge needed to meet your employer’s operator certification requirements. You’ll learn how certification works, including formal instruction, hands-on training, and performance evaluations, as well as the requirement for re-evaluation at least every three years.

A strong focus is placed on pre-operation inspections, which are required before each shift. You’ll learn how to inspect fluid levels, hydraulic systems, tires, forks, safety devices, and warning decals, and how to recognize conditions that require a truck to be taken out of service.

Most importantly, this training covers safe operating practices for rough terrain. You’ll learn how to control speed, approach turns safely, travel in reverse when loads obstruct visibility, and navigate slopes and grades without compromising stability. Proper load handling is emphasized, including centering and securing loads, using mast tilt correctly, and maintaining balance to prevent tip-overs.

The course also covers safe parking procedures and what to do when a hazardous condition is identified, such as overheating, mechanical failure, or fuel or hydraulic leaks. Knowing when and how to remove a truck from service is critical to preventing serious incidents.

By understanding and applying these standards and best practices, operators can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatal tip-overs. This training is essential for construction professionals, material handlers, and anyone assigned to operate a Class VII rough terrain forklift in outdoor or challenging work environments.
